A 35-year-old man wanted in connection with a grenade attack on a temple in Amritsar in March 2025 has been arrested in Bihar. Sharanjit Kumar, also known as Sunny, was apprehended on Friday evening from a roadside eatery on National Highway-19 (GT Road) in Gaya district. Sharanjit is a resident of Bhaini Bangar village in Gurdaspur district, Punjab.

The grenade attack occurred on March 15, 2025, at the Thakur Dwara temple on Sher Shah Suri Road in the Khandwala area of Amritsar. Masked men on a motorcycle carried out the attack. While no one was injured, the blast damaged the temple walls and shattered windowpanes, causing panic in the area. A case was registered under the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and other relevant provisions.

According to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sharanjit Kumar was actively involved in the conspiracy and execution of the terror attack. The NIA stated that the grenade attack was carried out by two bike-borne assailants, Gursidak Singh and Vishal Gill, who were working under the direction of handlers based abroad. NIA investigations revealed that the handlers, with a transnational presence in Europe, the USA, and Canada, provided terror hardware, funds, logistical support, and target details to their operatives in India.

The NIA investigation revealed that Gursidak and Vishal were involved in procuring and supplying multiple consignments of grenades, arms, and ammunition. Sharanjit received a consignment of four grenades from another arrested accused in Batala, Gurdaspur, on March 1. Two days before the attack, Sharanjit handed over one grenade to Gursidak Singh and Vishal Gill. Gursidak was killed in an exchange of fire with police near Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport on March 17.

After the NIA searched the Batala area a month ago, Sharanjit had absconded. Extensive investigation based on human and technical intelligence led the NIA to trace him to Gaya, where he was living in disguise as a truck driver. He was hiding in a roadside lodge on GT Road. After monitoring his movements for several days, the NIA zeroed in on his location at a roadside eatery on NH 19 near Gopalpur village in the Sherghati police station area. With the help of local police, the NIA arrested him on Friday.

Following the arrest, an NIA team took Sharanjit to Chandigarh after obtaining transit remand from a Sherghati Court. Further investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the transnational terror network involved in the Amritsar attack.
