Punjab is grappling with the aftermath of severe floods, which have affected over 1,400 villages and 3.54 million residents across 23 districts, since August 2025. The crisis, deemed the worst in nearly four decades, was triggered by unusually heavy monsoon rains in the upper catchment areas and the release of surplus water from dams.

In response to this devastation, several BJP-ruled states have stepped forward to provide aid and support. Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, and Assam have extended financial assistance and shipped flood relief material to the affected regions. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini dispatched 25 trucks of relief material to Punjab and Himachal Pradesh from Panchkula. The Delhi government flagged off trucks carrying relief material for flood-affected families in Punjab and announced financial assistance of Rs 5 crore for Punjab. Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, conveyed solidarity and contributed Rs 5 crore to Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav also rushed aid to Chhattisgarh, providing Rs 5 crore in funds and essential relief materials.

The floods have caused extensive damage, with over 2.5 lakh acres of farmland flooded. The severely affected districts include Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Ferozepur, Pathankot, Kapurthala, and Fazilka. Other districts like Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Rupnagar, Moga, Sangrur, Barnala, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali) have also been heavily impacted, suffering crop damage, displacement, and infrastructure loss.

Rescue operations have been extensive, involving the Army, NDRF, BSF, and district authorities, who have evacuated around 11,330 people to safer locations. Drones have been deployed to deliver essential supplies like medicines and food to remote areas, while amphibious vehicles have facilitated evacuations in areas like Ramdas, Amritsar. Relief camps have been set up to provide shelter for displaced residents.

Various civil and humanitarian organizations, including Khalsa Aid, Global Sikhs, and The Kalgidhar Trust, have initiated large-scale relief operations. These organizations are delivering essentials such as drinking water, ration bags, medical aid, and fodder for livestock in districts like Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Ferozepur, and Abohar. Khalsa Aid has also deployed de-watering systems to dry waterlogged land and is working with farmers to restore their fields.

The Punjab government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has conducted aerial surveys and ordered a special girdawari (damage assessment), promising full compensation for flood-related losses. Schools and colleges across Punjab were closed as a safety precaution.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab on September 9 to assess the damage, meet with affected people and farmers, and oversee relief operations. The visit aims to ensure coordinated efforts between the Centre and the state government for effective relief and rehabilitation. The Prime Minister is expected to stress the need to strengthen embankments along the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and Ghaggar rivers.

Despite the ongoing relief efforts, challenges remain. Floodwaters have yet to recede in many areas, and damaged roads, submerged villages, and stranded residents are slowing down operations.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also involved in the relief efforts, conducting humanitarian operations in the affected regions. IAF helicopters have evacuated people and airlifted essential relief material.
