Several Indian states are bracing for a period of intense rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing warnings and alerts across the country. Gujarat and Rajasthan are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the possibility of flash flooding in certain areas.
States on High Alert
Gujarat: A red alert has been issued for Gujarat, with warnings of extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD forecasts very heavy to exceptionally heavy rainfall in the state.
Rajasthan: East Rajasthan is also under a high alert, expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Other States Experiencing Heavy Rainfall
Madhya Pradesh: Heavy rainfall is predicted for Madhya Pradesh.
Odisha: The state is likely to experience isolated heavy rainfall.
Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim: These regions are expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next few days.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal: Similar weather conditions, including heavy showers, are expected in these southern regions.
Uttarakhand: A heavy rainfall alert has been issued for Uttarakhand, raising concerns about potential landslides and road blockages.
Konkan and Goa: These regions are also bracing for very heavy rainfall.
States with Moderate Rainfall and Thunderstorms
Punjab: While not under a red alert, Punjab has been dealing with the impact of widespread heavy rainfall that has affected numerous villages.
Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi: These regions are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms. The IMD predicts a generally cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers for Delhi-NCR.
Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Kerala, Mahe, and Telangana: These states are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.
Himachal Pradesh: A yellow alert has been issued for Himachal Pradesh, where heavy rains are expected.
Advisories and Impact
The IMD has warned of squally conditions along the Gujarat coast and the Arabian Sea, with winds reaching 45–55 kmph and gusting up to 65 kmph. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during this period.
In Punjab, the heavy rainfall has already impacted nearly 1,655 villages, with Gurdaspur being the worst affected. The state government has intensified relief measures in the affected districts.
The Beas River in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, has flooded, causing damage to security barriers and raising concerns for residents' safety.
