Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Himachal Pradesh and Punjab today, September 9, 2025, to assess the flood situation and review relief operations in the two states. The states have been severely affected by heavy monsoon rains, leading to widespread flooding and landslides.

PM Modi's itinerary includes aerial surveys of the flood-affected areas and high-level review meetings with state officials. In Himachal Pradesh, he is expected to arrive in Kangra around 1:30 PM for an aerial survey of the regions hit by floods and landslides. Following the survey, he will meet with state authorities in Dharamshala for a review meeting. The Prime Minister also intends to meet with flood-affected residents, along with personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Aapda Mitra Team.

Later in the afternoon, around 3 PM, PM Modi will conduct an aerial survey of Punjab's flood-affected areas. He is scheduled to arrive in Gurdaspur around 4:15 PM to discuss the situation with senior officials and chair another review meeting. He will also interact with flood victims and relief teams in Gurdaspur.

The visit aims to closely monitor relief and rehabilitation efforts and ensure necessary support for the people in both states during this challenging time.

Both states have faced severe damage due to the floods. Himachal Pradesh has reported 355 fatalities. In Punjab, widespread flooding has affected over 1.75 lakh acres of farmland, destroying paddy crops. Over 1,650 villages in all 23 districts are submerged. The districts hardest hit include Gurdaspur, where approximately 1.45 lakh residents have been affected, followed by Amritsar, Ferozepur, and Fazilka. The state has reported 37 deaths and three missing persons. All educational institutions in Punjab were closed until September 7.

The Indian Army has been conducting extensive Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions in flood-affected regions across the country, with a special focus on Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. The Army has deployed 126 rescue columns, rescuing over 21,500 civilians, providing medical aid to nearly 9,700 people, and delivering 23,500 kg of relief supplies. In Punjab, 48 rescue columns were deployed, saving 10,000 civilians, assisting 4,700 people medically, and delivering 12,500 kg of essentials.

Ahead of PM Modi's visit, Punjab's AAP government has requested a relief package of Rs 20,000 crore from the central government. Punjab Cabinet Minister Aman Arora criticized what he called "mere flood tourism" and demanded the immediate release of Rs 60,000 crore in pending funds, including GST compensation and Rural and Market Development Funds. Punjab Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal urged PM Modi to be "magnanimous" in providing assistance and sought an immediate release of at least Rs 25,000 crore flood compensation.
