The recent wave of violent protests in Nepal, triggered by a government ban on social media and fueled by deeper discontent over corruption and economic instability, has sparked serious safety concerns among Indian students residing in the country. The protests, spearheaded by Gen Z demonstrators, have resulted in widespread unrest, leading to casualties, injuries, and significant disruptions in daily life.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has voiced its concern over the escalating violence and has issued an advisory urging Indian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to Nepal until the situation stabilizes. Those already in Nepal are strongly advised to remain indoors, avoid venturing into protest-affected areas, and strictly adhere to the safety advisories issued by local Nepalese authorities and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. The MEA has also shared emergency contact numbers for assistance.

The protests initially erupted in response to the government's decision to ban 26 social media sites, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and YouTube. This ban was perceived as an attempt to stifle dissent and control information, igniting widespread anger among the youth. However, the demonstrations quickly evolved into a broader anti-government movement, reflecting deep-seated public frustration with alleged corruption, dwindling economic opportunities, and a perceived apathy towards the common people by the political elite.

The situation escalated rapidly, with protesters storming government buildings, setting fire to the parliament, and attacking the private residences of prominent political leaders. Police responded with water cannons, tear gas, and even live ammunition in some instances, leading to clashes and casualties. Tragically, at least 19 people have died in the violence, and hundreds more have been injured.

The unrest has prompted the Nepal Army to take charge of security, deploying military personnel across Kathmandu and imposing restrictive orders and curfews to curb further violence. The India-Nepal border has also been placed on high alert, with increased surveillance to prevent any potential spillover of violence into Indian territory.

For Indian students in Nepal, the situation is particularly precarious. Many are living in a state of anxiety, constantly calling their families and friends to check on their safety. Some students have deferred their travel plans to return home, fearing for their well-being amidst the ongoing unrest.

The Indian government, as well as state governments like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, have stepped in to monitor the safety and facilitate the return of stranded citizens. Several Indian airlines, including Indigo and Air India, have temporarily suspended flights to and from Kathmandu in light of the airport closure and the prevailing security situation.

As the situation in Nepal remains volatile, the safety and well-being of Indian students and other nationals are of paramount concern. The Indian government is closely monitoring the situation and providing necessary assistance to ensure their safe return home.
