At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, India strongly responded to Switzerland's remarks regarding the protection of minorities and freedom of expression within India. Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi, addressing the council, dismissed Switzerland's comments as "surprising, shallow, and ill-informed".

Tyagi emphasized that Switzerland, in its role as the UNHRC president, should avoid presenting "blatantly false" narratives that misrepresent the reality of India. Instead, he suggested that Switzerland should concentrate on addressing its own internal challenges, such as "racism, systematic discrimination, and xenophobia". Tyagi stated that India, being the "world's largest, most diverse, and vibrant democracy," is ready to assist Switzerland in tackling these issues.

The Indian diplomat's remarks were made during the 5th Meeting of the 60th Session of the UNHRC. Switzerland had previously called on India to take effective measures to protect minorities and uphold the rights to freedom of expression and the media. Tyagi's response underscored India's commitment to protecting its citizens and defending its sovereignty. He also criticized the use of the UNHRC platform to disseminate false narratives.

Furthermore, Tyagi delivered a strong rebuke to Pakistan, labeling it a "dump truck" of recycled lies and a "failed state" that relies on instability and handouts. He accused Pakistan of manipulating the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to disseminate propaganda against India. Tyagi highlighted Pakistan's support for terrorist networks and its history of violence, including the attacks in Pahalgam, Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot, and Mumbai. He asserted that India does not need lessons from a "terror sponsor" or advice from a state that has compromised its own credibility.

India's assertive stance at the UNHRC reflects its determination to address criticisms and counter what it perceives as misinformation. The country's response to Switzerland highlights the importance of focusing on domestic issues and avoiding the propagation of false narratives on international platforms. India's offer to assist Switzerland in addressing its internal challenges underscores its commitment to promoting human rights and pluralism.

The exchange between India and Switzerland occurred against the backdrop of otherwise strengthening bilateral relations. Earlier in the year, the two countries finalized the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), with Switzerland ratifying the agreement in July.
