Political instability and widespread unrest in Nepal have triggered a series of jailbreaks, prompting a security alert along the Indo-Nepal border. India's Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has apprehended a total of 22 escaped prisoners attempting to cross into India.
The recent unrest in Nepal, stemming from protests against corruption and a social media ban, has led to the toppling of the government and a surge in prison breaks across the country. Reports indicate that the military is struggling to maintain control, with hundreds of inmates escaping detention centers. Some inmates have taken to the streets chanting slogans before being contained. In one instance, inmates set fires inside a facility while chanting demands for release before escaping.
In response to the escalating situation, the SSB has heightened its vigilance along the 1,751-km Indo-Nepal border. The apprehended prisoners were caught at different checkpoints in Uttar Pradesh, including the Siddharth Nagar district, which falls under the Gorakhpur sector. Security agencies in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have intensified patrols and strengthened surveillance to prevent illegal infiltration. Border outposts have been put on high alert, with strict checking of vehicles and pedestrians entering from Nepal.
In a separate incident, the SSB arrested 10 prisoners who escaped from the Jaleshwar jail in Mahottari district of Nepal. These individuals were apprehended in the Surasand and Bhittha areas of Sitamarhi district in Bihar. Among those arrested, eight are Nepali nationals, and two are Indian citizens. Preliminary investigations suggest that all of them were undertrial prisoners.
The SSB handed over the prisoners to the local police. The police have registered cases and are conducting further investigations. Authorities have stated that vigilance will continue, and security has been significantly tightened across six other border districts of Bihar. Joint patrols by the SSB and local police have been intensified, and all individuals crossing the border are being thoroughly screened.
Nepalese authorities have reported that nearly 6,000 prisoners are on the run following widespread unrest in the country. Indian security forces remain on heightened alert across several border districts, including Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Balrampur, and Sitamarhi. Authorities have appealed to local residents to immediately report any suspicious movement near the border.
