Tom Holland is celebrating a significant milestone in his personal life: three and a half years of sobriety. The actor, widely known for his role as Spider-Man, has been open about his journey to ditching alcohol and the positive impact it has had on his well-being.
Holland's path to sobriety began in January 2022 when he decided to participate in "Dry January". He found the experience eye-opening, realizing how much he had come to rely on alcohol in social situations. He noticed that "every Friday after work was a write-off" and that he would often drink to the point of "ruining" the next day. An incident where he asked his younger brother to drive him home from a party because he felt he needed to drink to enjoy himself served as a wake-up call.
Initially, Holland planned to abstain from alcohol for just the month of January. However, he extended his sobriety, challenging himself to go alcohol-free for a second and third month. He then set a goal to remain sober until his 26th birthday in June. Ultimately, he found that the benefits of sobriety outweighed the initial challenges.
Holland has described his decision to get sober as "the best thing [he's] ever done". He has reported improvements in various aspects of his life, including better sleep, improved mental clarity, and the ability to handle problems more effectively. He also feels healthier and fitter overall. In an interview with Esquire magazine, Holland stated that his sobriety "feels amazing... a little bit like a brand-new identity, almost".
Holland didn't go to rehab but instead leaned on his support system. This included family, friends, old and new colleagues, and even people he didn't know who had also experienced sobriety. He also received valuable advice from his lawyer: "You'll never wake up the morning after a night out and wish you had a drink". This advice resonated with Holland, who admitted that his problem was that he would often "go too far" after just one drink.
In line with his new alcohol-free lifestyle, Holland has ventured into the non-alcoholic beverage industry. He launched his own non-alcoholic beer brand, Bero, which he says is "going really well". He expressed his pride in the company, stating, "Every day we're making big steps in the right direction, and we're growing every day—thinking of new ways to innovate and coming up with new ideas for products".
Holland's journey to sobriety has inspired many, and he joins a growing list of celebrities who have chosen to embrace an alcohol-free lifestyle. His story demonstrates the transformative power of self-awareness and the positive impact that sobriety can have on one's life. While navigating his personal journey, Holland has also been busy with his acting career, with the upcoming film 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' slated for release on July 31, 2026.
