The Akal Takht, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, had previously banned Sikh preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale from holding religious congregations due to allegations of misinterpreting Gurbani (hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib). However, on May 21, 2025, the Akal Takht lifted the ban, marking the end of a five-year deadlock. The ban was initially imposed on August 24, 2020, after a sub-committee found some of his statements objectionable.

The decision to lift the ban came after Dhadrianwale appeared before the five high priests at the Akal Takht to seek forgiveness for his past controversial remarks regarding the Gurmat (Guru's wisdom). Officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj questioned Dhadrianwale from the Akal Takht podium regarding his controversial remarks on Sikh principles. Dhadrianwale acknowledged his mistakes and expressed his desire to work within the mainstream of the Khalsa Panth, preaching Sikhism under the guidance of the Akal Takht. As a symbolic gesture of acceptance and reconciliation, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj ordered Dhadrianwale to offer a 'deg' worth ₹501 at the Akal Takht.

In lifting the ban, the high priests instructed Dhadrianwale to strictly adhere to the Akal Takht Sahib-approved Sikh Rehat Maryada (Sikh code of conduct), traditions, and historical Sakshis. He is now forbidden from making derogatory comments against Sikh institutions or sacred Sarovars.

The Akal Takht's decision to pardon Dhadrianwale also involved reinstating Giani Ranjit Singh Gauhar, another Sikh preacher, after an internal investigation cleared him of all allegations. Additionally, former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president Harwinder Singh Sarna apologized for inappropriate remarks against Sikh scholars and clergy.

Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj had extended an invitation to Dhadrianwale and other prominent preachers to clarify past controversies and rejoin the mainstream of Sikh preaching. This invitation was aimed at countering religious conversions and fostering cohesion within the Khalsa Panth. The Jathedar emphasized that the Akal Takht's doors remained open to those willing to return with humility and align with the teachings of the Sikh Gurus.

Giani Raghbir Singh was the Jathedar of the Akal Takht but was removed from the post on March 7, 2025 and replaced by Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. The SGPC deemed Giani Raghbir Singh's leadership as inadequate.
