The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Yatra is set to resume on Sunday, September 14, 2025, after being suspended for 19 days. The pilgrimage to the revered cave shrine was halted on August 26th following a devastating landslide triggered by heavy rains and a cloudburst at Ardhkuwari in the Trikuta hills of Katra, Jammu and Kashmir. The landslide claimed the lives of 34 pilgrims and injured 20 others.
The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDB) announced the resumption of the Yatra, contingent on favorable weather conditions. The board conveyed the announcement via its official X handle, stating "Jai Mata Di! The Vaishno Devi Yatra will resume from September 14 (Sunday), subject to favourable weather conditions". Devotees can visit the official website www.maavaishnodevi.org for details and bookings.
The temporary suspension was necessitated due to the inclement weather conditions and essential maintenance of the track leading to the shrine. The landslide had blocked tracks, making the journey unsafe for pilgrims. Restoration work was undertaken on priority to clear debris and secure the routes. The Shrine Board thanked devotees for their patience and understanding during the suspension period. A spokesperson added, "The resumption of the Yatra marks a reaffirmation of our collective faith and resilience. The Board remains committed to upholding the sanctity, safety, and dignity of this revered pilgrimage".
To ensure the safety of pilgrims, the Shrine Board has mandated several important rules. Every pilgrim must carry valid identification proof, such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, or passport. NRIs should bring their Indian passport or Permanent Resident Certificate. Pilgrims are required to follow the designated routes and cooperate with on-ground staff. RFID-based tracking cards will be mandatory for each devotee to ensure transparency and traceability.
The Yatra's suspension was the longest since the COVID-19 restrictions. The tragedy prompted authorities to halt the Yatra and carry out urgent safety and maintenance measures along the track. The reopening of the Yatra comes just before Navratri, adding spiritual significance. The Shrine Board has expressed its commitment to maintaining the sanctity and safety of the pilgrimage.
