Gaganpreet Kaur, the woman who was driving the BMW that collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the death of Navjot Singh, a senior Finance Ministry official, has been taken into police custody. The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon near the Delhi Cantonment metro station. Navjot Singh, 52, who was a Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs, died in the crash, while his wife, Sandeep Kaur, sustained serious injuries.
According to reports, the couple was returning home after visiting the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara. The BMW, driven by Gaganpreet, collided with their motorcycle. Gaganpreet was accompanied by her husband, Parikshit Makkar, and their two young children.
Following the accident, Gaganpreet and Parikshit transported Navjot and Sandeep to Nulife Hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 19 kilometers from the accident site. This decision to bypass closer medical facilities, such as AIIMS and Safdarjung Hospital, has raised suspicions of a potential cover-up and destruction of evidence. Sandeep Kaur stated that she repeatedly asked Gaganpreet to take them to the nearest hospital, but Gaganpreet directed the driver to Nulife Hospital. The family of the victim alleges that the hospital is linked to Gaganpreet's family. Police sources have indicated that Gaganpreet's father co-owns the hospital, and an investigation is underway to determine if there was an attempt to conceal the case. The hospital authorities have acknowledged following all protocols but have not confirmed Gaganpreet's connection to the owners.
Sandeep Kaur, in her statement to the police, mentioned that the BMW was speeding and overturned after rear-ending their motorcycle. She also stated that after the collision, both she and her husband were thrown into the air and fell under an oncoming bus, exacerbating their injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that Gaganpreet was driving the BMW at the time of the collision. After the accident, she and her husband hired a vehicle and rushed the injured to the hospital. A van driver, Mohammad Gulfam, stated that the couple insisted on taking the injured to a hospital approximately 22 kilometers away.
The police have registered a case under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections 281 (rash driving), 125B (endangering life or personal safety), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence or giving false information). The BMW and the motorcycle have been seized, and the accident site was examined by the crime team and forensic experts. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team also visited the site to investigate the circumstances leading to the crash.
The investigation is ongoing, with a focus on determining the motive behind the choice of hospital and whether there was an attempt to tamper with evidence. Police are also investigating whether there was negligence and delay in providing medical assistance to the victims.
