The Manipuri film Boong, backed by Farhan Akhtar, is scheduled to be released in select Indian theaters on September 19, 2025. Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film has already garnered attention and acclaim at various international film festivals.
Boong marks the directorial debut for Lakshmipriya Devi, who previously worked as a first assistant director on notable films such as Luck by Chance, Talaash, PK, and Mira Nair's A Suitable Boy. The film is produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures. The lead roles are played by Gugun Kipgen as Boong and Bala Hijam.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in the Discovery section. It was also selected as the Spotlight Film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025, where it had its Victorian state premiere. Boong has also been screened at other festivals, including MAMI, the Adelaide Film Festival, and the San Diego International Film Festival. The film received a "U" certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in 2025.
Boong tells the story of a young boy named Boong, who lives in the valley of Manipur and embarks on a journey to find his father and bring him home as a surprise gift for his mother. His quest leads to unexpected revelations and a new beginning.
The film has already won several accolades, including Best Feature Film at the International South Asian Film Festival in Canada, Best Youthful Film at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia, and the Audience Choice Award for Best Narrative Feature Film at The Indie Meme Film Festival.
