Anze Kopitar, the Los Angeles Kings' captain and arguably the greatest player in the franchise's history, has announced that he will retire at the end of the 2025-26 NHL season. The announcement, made on Thursday, September 18, 2025, marks the end of an era for the Kings and their fans. Kopitar, who will be 38 years old when he retires, is entering his 20th season with the team.

Kopitar stated that his decision was influenced by his desire to spend more time with his family. He expressed that his family deserves a husband and father who is present, especially as his children approach their teenage years. Despite his decision to retire, Kopitar affirmed his commitment and motivation for the upcoming season. He aims to compete at the highest level and is eager for the season ahead.

Throughout his career with the Kings, Kopitar has achieved remarkable milestones. Drafted 11th overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, he quickly became a star, making his NHL debut in 2006 as the first Slovenian to play in the league. He has consistently led the team in scoring, is the Kings' all-time leader in games played and assists, and is on pace to become the franchise's all-time leading scorer. Kopitar has also captained the team since 2016, becoming the longest-tenured captain in team history.

Kopitar was a driving force behind the Kings' Stanley Cup victories in 2012 and 2014. His two-way play has garnered him numerous accolades, including two Frank J. Selke Trophies as the league's best defensive forward and three Lady Byng Memorial Trophies for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct. In the 2021-22 season, he was awarded the Mark Messier Leadership Award.

Kopitar's impact extends beyond his on-ice performance. He has become a respected figure in the league and a role model for aspiring hockey players, especially in his native Slovenia. His dedication, leadership, and contributions to the Los Angeles community have solidified his legacy as one of the Kings' all-time greats.

As Kopitar enters his final season, he remains focused on the team's success. He hopes to avoid being a distraction and is determined to make the most of his last year. With the goal of winning a third Stanley Cup, Kopitar is prepared to give it his all in what he anticipates will be a special season.

The Los Angeles Kings will begin their regular season at home against the Colorado Avalanche on October 7, marking the start of what will undoubtedly be a season-long celebration of Kopitar's remarkable career.
