Erling Haaland continues to make his mark on the Champions League, setting a new benchmark for scoring speed. The Manchester City striker has become the fastest player to reach 50 goals in the competition, achieving the milestone in just 49 appearances.
Haaland's achievement surpasses the previous record held by Ruud van Nistelrooy, who took 62 games to reach 50 goals. At 25 years old, Haaland's pace in the Champions League places him among the top ten all-time scorers in the competition.
"He seems to break every record going. At his age, it's unheard of what he's doing,” said City teammate Phil Foden. City Manager Pep Guardiola added, "The numbers speak for itself... If he plays 10, 12 years... if he maintains this progression, absolutely (he can)".
Haaland's 50th goal came during Manchester City's 2-0 victory over Napoli. Since joining City from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has an impressive record of 130 goals in 151 appearances. In the current season, he has already scored 12 goals in seven appearances for both club and country.
While Haaland's record is impressive, he still has a way to go to catch Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the all-time top scorer in the Champions League with 140 goals. Ronaldo has maintained the top spot since September 2015. Lionel Messi is second with 129 goals.
Haaland has surpassed some of European soccer's greats, including Alfredo Di Stefano and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He is now level with Filippo Inzaghi and just one goal behind Thierry Henry on UEFA's all-time list.
Haaland's scoring rate is more than one goal per game, a rate significantly better than anyone else in the top 50 scorers in European Cup history. Of his 50 Champions League goals, 27 were scored with Manchester City, 15 with Borussia Dortmund and 8 with Red Bull Salzburg.
Erling Haaland's Champions League milestones: * Fastest to 30 goals * Fastest to 35 goals * Youngest to 35 goals * Fastest to 40 goals * Fastest to 50 goals
Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League records: * Most goals (140) * Most assists (42) * Most goals in a season (17) * Most goals in the knockout stages (67) * Most appearances (183) * Most final wins (5) * Only player to score in three finals
While Cristiano Ronaldo's records remain unchallenged for now, Erling Haaland, at just 25 years old, is showing the potential to reach similar heights.
