Two soldiers were killed and four others injured in an ambush on an Assam Rifles truck in Manipur's Bishnupur district on Friday, September 19, 2025. The incident occurred around 5:40 PM in the Nambol Sabal Leikai area, approximately 8 kilometers from the Imphal airport, as the vehicle was traveling from Imphal to Bishnupur.
According to police reports, the truck, carrying personnel of the 33 Assam Rifles, was attacked by unidentified gunmen. The gunmen fired at the paramilitary forces' vehicle. Visuals from the scene indicated a significant police presence and one official with severe injuries. The injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The location of the ambush, situated between Imphal and Churachandpur, underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region. Sources indicate that the road where the attack occurred is the same route used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his recent visit to Manipur.
This attack marks the first deadly incident targeting central security forces in Manipur since last year, amidst ongoing conflict since violence erupted on May 3, 2023. The last similar incident took place in the Jiribam district, bordering Assam's Cachar district, where a CRPF jawan was killed and others were injured in an ambush.
The ambush occurred two days before a planned bandh (general strike) called by valley-based militant groups protesting the Manipur merger agreement of September 21, 1949.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla condemned the attack, assuring that such acts of violence would not be tolerated and that the strongest measures would be taken to maintain peace and stability in the state.
