Mackie Samoskevich, the Florida Panthers' 2021 first-round pick, has a significant opportunity to earn a permanent spot on the roster as the team prepares for the 2025-26 season. With the Panthers aiming for their third consecutive Stanley Cup, injuries and expiring contracts could open doors for young players like Samoskevich to step up.

Samoskevich is coming off a productive rookie season where he tallied 15 goals and 16 assists. His goal total ranked eighth among all NHL rookies, and he also tied for second in game-winning goals among rookies with five. Additionally, he was sixth among rookies in power-play points, recording 11 (four goals, seven assists).

Recently, Samoskevich switched his jersey number from 25 to 11, a number he wore in college and which holds personal significance as it was also his sister Melissa's number. He sees this change as a reflection of his growing comfort and establishment within the league. The number also has historical significance for the Panthers, having been worn by notable players like Bill Lindsay.

General Manager Bill Zito praised Samoskevich as a talented young forward who demonstrated skill and maturity beyond his age during his first full NHL season. Zito highlighted Samoskevich's ability to fit into any lineup and find success, attributing it to his play and character, and expressed anticipation for his continued competition within the organization.

Samoskevich himself exuded confidence during training camp, asserting his belief in his abilities and his intention to contribute to the team's success. He emphasized the importance of playing with good players and enjoying the game.

Coach Paul Maurice has acknowledged Samoskevich's skill set, particularly his "NHL hands" and skating pace. While refraining from definitively guaranteeing a roster spot, Maurice has recognized that it's not a question of if Samoskevich will play in the NHL, but when. To facilitate Samoskevich's development, Maurice has paired him with core players like Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen during training camp.

After winning the Stanley Cup, the Panthers have re-signed Samoskevich to a one-year contract worth $775,000. The team's roster is largely intact from their championship run, with Samoskevich being the final player from that squad to sign a new deal.

With Matthew Tkachuk potentially missing the start of the season, Samoskevich is likely to get a chance in the middle six. This presents a valuable opportunity for him to solidify his role and potentially secure a larger one moving forward. However, the Panthers are currently over the salary cap, requiring them to make adjustments before the season begins. This could involve utilizing the injured reserve or other roster moves.
