The comment was made during a 2016 appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 5, where Ranbir and Ranveer were guests. Host Karan Johar brought up the former relationship between Ranbir and Deepika, asking if it ever created any awkwardness between Ranbir and Ranveer. Ranbir dismissed the idea, stating that he and Deepika had broken up long ago. He emphasized that everyone had moved on and that there was no awkwardness.

Ranbir then went on to praise Deepika and Ranveer's relationship. He noted how well they complemented each other and how perfect they were for each other's energies. It was then that he expressed his hope that they would have "some really awesome babies together". More than that, he wished that their children would like him as an actor and that he would become their favorite actor. Ranveer playfully pointed out that Ranbir, usually composed, seemed to have gone off-script.
