The Los Angeles Kings are facing an unexpected roster challenge early in the season with Corey Perry sidelined due to injury. Perry, who signed a one-year deal with the Kings this offseason, underwent surgery and is expected to miss six to eight weeks. This creates an opportunity for several players to step up and fill his role. While multiple options exist, one candidate appears to be the frontrunner: Jeff Malott.
Malott, 29, has impressed the coaching staff with his performance in training camp and his strong play at the end of last season. Coach Jim Hiller noted that Malott has added muscle and is playing with increased confidence, making him look like an NHL player. Malott's consistent goal-scoring record in the AHL, where he has notched 23, 23, 22, and another 23-goal campaign over the past four years, also makes him an attractive option.
While many fans may have hoped to see prospect Liam Greentree get a nine-game trial in Perry's absence, there may be concern that a 19 year old skilled winger may not be ready for limited minutes on the fourth line with no power-play time. Malott may be a more natural fit to replace Perry on the opening night roster.
Other potential replacements for Perry include Akil Thomas, Samuel Helenius, and Andre Lee. Thomas, 25, played 25 games for the Kings last season and has been considered NHL-ready for some time. Helenius, a sizable player at 6-foot-6 and 210 pounds, has NHL experience and can play on the fourth line. Lee made his NHL debut with the Kings last season, appearing in 19 games.
Ultimately, training camp battles and exhibition play will determine who ultimately takes Perry's spot on the line with Joel Armia and Alex Turcotte.
