The father of a 23-year-old MBBS student, who was allegedly gang-raped in Durgapur, West Bengal, is seeking to move his daughter back to their home state of Odisha, citing safety concerns and a loss of trust in the local authorities. The survivor, a second-year student at a private medical college in Durgapur, was allegedly attacked on Friday night.
The father has expressed fears for his daughter's life, stating, "They could kill her here any moment. That's why we want to take her back to Odisha. Trust has been lost. We don't want her to stay in Bengal. She will pursue her education in Odisha". He has appealed to both the Chief Ministers of West Bengal and Odisha to facilitate her transfer. The father also mentioned that Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi has offered support and assistance.
The incident has sparked outrage and a political row. The West Bengal police have arrested five individuals in connection with the crime. The three initially arrested were remanded to 10 days of police custody. The Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court has granted nine days police custody to the two most recently arrested suspects.
Adding to the controversy, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned why the student was out of her campus late at night, a remark that has been criticized as victim-blaming. Banerjee later clarified that her statement had been distorted. Opposition parties have strongly condemned Banerjee's remarks.
Meanwhile, the Odisha State Commission for Women is sending a team to Durgapur to assess the survivor's health and the progress of the police investigation. The team, led by chairperson Sovana Mohanty, will submit its recommendations to the Odisha government. Mohanty described the incident as "barbaric, condemnable, and painful".
Police are also investigating the role of the male friend who was with the survivor on the night of the alleged gang rape, noting inconsistencies in his statements. The survivor's father has also questioned why the friend did not raise an alarm or seek help during the attack.
The survivor is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Durgapur. Ranjana Roy, Deputy Magistrate and SDO Durgapur, has assured that the victim is receiving full support and that action will be taken. Authorities from Odisha have also visited the family, assuring them of the state government's support and coordination with the West Bengal Police.
