Adil Hussain's Kabir Singh Regret: Why He Now Believes He Should Have Declined the Controversial Role.

Adil Hussain has once again expressed his regret over his involvement in the 2019 film Kabir Singh, stating that he should have said no to the project. In a recent interview, Hussain admitted that he didn't read the script before signing on and later found the film to be misogynistic.

Hussain confessed that Kabir Singh is the only film he has ever done without reading the script. At the time, he was heavily involved with Mukti Bhawan and didn't have the opportunity to review the full script or watch the original Telugu version, Arjun Reddy. He even instructed his manager to ask for five times his usual fee, hoping the producers would decline, but they agreed. He accepted the role after reading a scene he initially thought was "brilliantly written".

However, his perception changed drastically after watching the film. "I found it misogynistic. When I saw the film, I thought, 'What have I done?'" Hussain revealed. He emphasizes that his regret is personal and not an accusation against director Sandeep Reddy Vanga. "It's not about what Sandeep Reddy Vanga has done—it's my responsibility. I could have said no," he stated. He also added that several of his women friends expressed their disappointment after watching the movie.

Hussain has been vocal about his disappointment with the film, stating that it "legitimizes male misogyny" and "glorifies violence," which he believes "should not be glorified". He even walked out of the theater 20 minutes into watching Kabir Singh. He felt so embarrassed and that being a part of the film "made him feel small".

Despite the film's immense commercial success, Hussain stands by his remarks, even after Vanga's response. Vanga reportedly stated that Kabir Singh brought Hussain more fame than his other "art films" and even threatened to replace Hussain's face with an AI version in the movie. Hussain clarified that he was not blaming Vanga but taking responsibility for his own decision. He stressed that filmmakers have a responsibility towards society, considering cinema's powerful influence.

Hussain's film Mercy recently won the Best International Feature Award at the London Independent Film Festival. He plays Father Joel, who helps resolve people's moral, emotional, and spiritual crises. Hussain is disappointed that meaningful stories are often overlooked in the Indian market, as Mercy is yet to be released in India.
