Goa's Ranji Star Achieves Historic Feat Surpassing Tendulkar and Kohli, A New Chapter in Cricket

Abhinav Tejrana, a Goa batter, has etched his name in Ranji Trophy history by achieving a remarkable feat that eluded even legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. This milestone arrived during Goa's season-opening match against Chandigarh at the Goa Cricket Association Academy Ground in Porvorim.

The 24-year-old Tejrana, making his First-Class debut, stormed into the record books by smashing a double century. He became only the 13th batter in the history of the Ranji Trophy to achieve this distinction on debut. This exclusive list includes names like Gundappa Viswanath and Amol Muzumdar, but not Gavaskar, Tendulkar, or Kohli. Jay Gohil was the last batter to reach the milestone, scoring 227 for Saurashtra against Assam.

Tejrana came in to bat at No. 3 for Goa. On the first day of the match, he reached his century. On Day 2, Tejrana added 70 runs to his overnight score of 130, reaching his double century in 301 balls. He scored 205 runs off 320 balls, hitting 21 fours and 4 sixes.

Tejrana also formed a 309-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Lalit Yadav. This partnership ended just one run short of Goa's record, which was previously held by Rahul Keni and Ajay Ratra.

This achievement follows Arjun Tendulkar's, son of Sachin Tendulkar, who claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket in a Ranji Trophy match against Arunachal Pradesh. Arjun finished with figures of 5 for 25 in 9 overs.

In related news from the Ranji Trophy, Snehal Kauthankar and Kashyap Bakle of Goa recorded the highest-ever partnership in Ranji Trophy history. They achieved this feat against Arunachal Pradesh, amassing 606 runs for the third wicket. Kauthankar scored 314 runs off 215 balls, while Bakle made 300 off 269 balls. Goa declared at 727 for 2. This is only the second time in Ranji history that two triple centuries have been scored in the same innings. WV Raman and Arjun Kripal Singh of Tamil Nadu scored triple centuries against Goa in 1989.

The 606-run stand between Kauthankar and Bakle is the second-highest in first-class cricket history, only surpassed by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene's 624-run partnership for Sri Lanka against South Africa in 2006. The previous Ranji Trophy record was 594 runs, set by Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne for Maharashtra against Delhi in the 2016-17 season.

Kauthankar's triple century was the second-fastest by an Indian in first-class cricket, achieved in 205 balls. Only Tanmay Agarwal of Hyderabad, who reached the mark in 147 balls last season, has been faster. Bakle's triple century was the third-fastest by an Indian. Kauthankar also reached his double century in 146 balls, the fourth-fastest in Ranji Trophy history.

Vidarbha and Kerala drew in the final match of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. Yash Rathod of Vidarbha finished as the leading run-scorer in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, with 960 runs. Harsh Dubey of Vidarbha broke the all-time record for most wickets in a Ranji Trophy season, taking 69 wickets.
