BJP's BMC Poll Assessment: Mahayuti Leads, Thackeray Reunion Unlikely to Impact Voter Preferences, Internal Report Suggests.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conducted an internal assessment indicating that the Mahayuti alliance is poised to win the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, regardless of a potential reunion between Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. The Mahayuti alliance comprises the BJP, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

According to BJP Mumbai president Ameet Satam, internal reviews and constituency-level evaluations suggest that Mahayuti is strategically placed to take charge of the BMC. Satam expressed strong confidence that the alliance will secure over 150 seats in the BMC polls. He explained that the BJP has conducted detailed ward-by-ward analyses, factoring in demographic trends, voter inclination, and past performances, which has given the alliance a strong sense of optimism.

While discussions on seat-sharing among the allies are yet to begin, Satam stated that the final seat-sharing formula would be worked out once the reservation lottery process concludes.

The reunion of Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray, who recently appeared on shared platforms after two decades of estrangement, has sparked speculation about a potential alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Political observers believe that a UBT–MNS alliance could sway Marathi votes in Mumbai, traditionally a Shiv Sena bastion. However, Satam said that the reunion has not had any impact on the ground and the Marathi people know who has done real work and will vote for the Mahayuti.

NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal also downplayed any threat from the reunion, framing it as emotional rather than electoral. Bhujbal asserted that the MahaYuti will emerge as the largest bloc regardless of any improvement in the seat tally of a potential Thackeray alliance.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also stated that the Mahayuti would win the BMC elections. He suggested that Uddhav Thackeray may pursue dinner, breakfast, and lunch diplomacy, but since he has deviated from the path set by the late Balasaheb Thackeray, he will not get votes from Mumbaikars. Fadnavis added that the Mahayuti government has ushered in development of the city.

The undivided Shiv Sena controlled the BMC for 25 consecutive years, from 1997 to 2022. In the 2017 BMC polls, the BJP won 82 seats, just behind the undivided Shiv Sena that had 84 seats.

Satam emphasized that the Mahayuti, with its combined strength, is prepared to deliver on long-pending developmental goals. He asserted that Mumbai deserves definite direction, a leadership that can ensure growth, security, and efficiency in governance. Satam underscored that the party's campaign would focus on development, safety, security, and long-term urban planning.

While the BJP appears confident in its prospects for the BMC elections, some political analysts believe that the MNS, despite a modest vote share, could be a factor in a significant number of wards. An analysis of the 2024 Assembly election results indicates that the MNS polled more votes than the margin between the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in a number of wards.
