India's passenger vehicle exports have demonstrated strong growth, rising by 18% in the April-September period of the current fiscal year. According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), total passenger vehicle exports reached 4,45,884 units, a significant increase from the 3,76,679 units exported during the same period last year.
Category-wise Performance
Passenger car shipments experienced a 12% increase, climbing to 2,29,281 units. Utility vehicle exports saw even more substantial growth, surging by 26% to reach 2,11,373 units. Van exports also performed well, registering a 36.5% increase, with shipments totaling 5,230 units.
Leading Exporters
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has emerged as the top exporter, shipping 2,05,763 units during the period. This represents a remarkable 40% jump compared to the 1,47,063 units exported in the same period last year. Hyundai Motor India followed, exporting 99,540 units, a 17% increase from the 84,900 units shipped in the corresponding period of the previous year. Nissan Motor India also contributed significantly, exporting 37,605 units, up from 33,059 units. Other notable exporters include Volkswagen India (28,011 units), Toyota Kirloskar Motor (18,880 units), Kia India (13,666 units), and Honda Cars India (13,243 units).
Key Export Markets and Growth Drivers
SIAM has attributed the growth in passenger vehicle exports to sustained global demand, particularly strong performance in the Middle East and Latin America. Indian exporters have achieved positive growth in 24 international markets during this period, demonstrating a broad-based expansion in export destinations. These markets include South Korea, the UAE, Germany, Togo, Egypt, Vietnam, Iraq, Mexico, Russia, Kenya, Nigeria, Canada, Poland, Sri Lanka, Oman, Thailand, Bangladesh, Brazil, Belgium, Italy and Tanzania. However, exports to the United States experienced a slight decline in September due to higher import tariffs.
Industry Outlook
Analysts suggest that this consistent export growth highlights India's growing importance as a global automotive hub. This is supported by strong manufacturing capabilities, competitive pricing, and increasing brand recognition in emerging markets. Maruti Suzuki is on track to export over 400,000 vehicles this fiscal year. The company has already shipped over 200,000 units in the April-September period. Maruti Suzuki's exports are more than double those of its nearest domestic competitor.
The export of the Jimny 5-door, which started in 2023, has reached more than 100 countries, including Japan, Mexico, and Australia. In Japan, where it is exported as 'Jimny Nomade', the model received over 50,000 orders within days of its introduction in January 2025.
