Anupam Kher defends 'Dhurandhar' against propaganda claims, citing his admiration for Kashmiri director Aditya Dhar.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has responded strongly to the criticism leveled against Aditya Dhar's recently released film, "Dhurandhar," with some calling it a propaganda film. Kher defended the film and praised director Aditya Dhar, emphasizing Dhar's Kashmiri background and his family's history of struggle.

In a video message shared on Instagram, Kher expressed his pride and peace regarding the film's success, despite not having any direct involvement. He stated that the audience's positive reception is the best response to the propaganda claims. Kher further asserted, "Don't teach us what propaganda is. You are not going to decide what is a propaganda film. Don't make us feel small". He believes that attempts to diminish art only make it stronger, and "Dhurandhar" has challenged preconceived notions.

Kher lauded Aditya Dhar's courage and conviction in making the film, highlighting that Dhar didn't follow any established patterns or formulas. He said, "I like 'Dhurandhar' from Aditya Dhar. Not only because he is a Kashmiri... As a filmmaker, he has not followed any pattern or formula. No formula. Just conviction". He also acknowledged Dhar's family's painful past and how the film's success demonstrates true courage.

Kher, акіn tо a cinema lover rather than a film expert, reflected on films that have become landmarks in cinematic history, such as "Godfather," "Sholay," and "Mughal-e-Azam". He also included his own films like "Saaransh," "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge," "A Wednesday," and "Khosla Ka Ghosla!," emphasizing their groundbreaking nature for offering fresh perspectives to viewers.

Kher also praised the performances of Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, and Sanjay Dutt in "Dhurandhar", and how Aditya Dhar skillfully crafted the story of unsung heroes. He shared that he had called both Singh and Khanna, but ultimately spoke with Dhar, exclaiming, "Tumhare andar Mata aayi hai kya? Kya film banayi Hai! (Have you been inspired? What a film you've created!)".

"Dhurandhar," released on December 5th, has been commercially successful, nearing the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office. A sequel is planned for release on March 19, 2026. The film's title, Kher revealed, was suggested by his late friend, Satish Kaushik, whose name is mentioned in the credits.
