Crypto infrastructure startup Commonware has successfully secured $25 million in a funding round led by Tempo, a blockchain network focused on payments. This investment highlights the growing interest in scaling blockchain-based payment systems.

Tempo, the lead investor, was launched in September by fintech giant Stripe and crypto venture firm Paradigm. While Commonware has disclosed Tempo's lead role, they have not revealed the other participants in the funding round.

Commonware develops open-source software that enables companies to build and deploy their own blockchains, contributing to the expanding Web3 infrastructure centered around payments. The CEO of Commonware emphasized the importance of partnerships with Tempo and Paradigm for usage and distribution, viewing these relationships as more valuable than traditional financial metrics at this stage of the company's development.

Tempo's position as a backer is particularly noteworthy. The company was recently valued at $5 billion following a $500 million funding round led by Thrive Capital and Greenoaks. This layer-1 blockchain has garnered attention for its specific focus on stablecoins and real-world payments. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison previously described Tempo as an "independent company, with Stripe and Paradigm as the first investors".

The broader trend of crypto payments is gaining momentum, fueled by increasing stablecoin adoption. This trend was further emphasized by the recent launch of the Blockchain Payments Consortium by seven crypto companies. The consortium aims to establish common standards for crosschain stablecoin transactions.
