India and France: Garuda Air Exercise Commences in Mont-de-Marsan, Strengthening Strategic Ties Through Joint Training.

Mont-de-Marsan, France – The Indian Air Force (IAF) has commenced its participation in the eighth edition of the 'Garuda' bilateral air exercise with the French Air and Space Force (FASF) at Mont-de-Marsan Air Base in France. The exercise, named Garuda 25, is scheduled from November 16 to November 27, 2025. This joint effort underscores the strengthening defense cooperation and strategic partnership between India and France.

An IAF contingent arrived in France on November 10, 2025, to prepare for the exercise. The IAF is fielding its Su-30MKI fighter jets in the exercise. Supporting the deployment is the C-17 Globemaster III, providing crucial airlift support for induction and de-induction phases. Additionally, IL-78 air-to-air refueling aircraft will extend the operational reach and endurance of the fighter jets.

During the two-week exercise, the IAF's Su-30MKI jets will engage in training alongside French multirole fighters in advanced, simulated combat scenarios. The drills will focus on a range of operations, including air-to-air engagements, air defense missions, and coordinated strike operations, all within a realistic operational environment. The primary objective is to refine tactics, enhance combat readiness, and strengthen joint operational capabilities between the two air forces.

Garuda 25 also provides a platform for deeper professional exchanges between the IAF and FASF. Personnel from both nations will participate in discussions, mission planning, and debrief sessions to share operational experiences and best practices. These interactions are designed to improve mutual understanding and enhance interoperability.

India and France share a deep and enduring strategic partnership that covers all aspects of bilateral cooperation, including defense, technology, and security. This partnership, initiated on January 26, 1998, was India's first such agreement. Joint defense exercises between the two countries have grown in scope and complexity over the years, with the Garuda series playing a vital role in fostering closer ties between the air forces.

In addition to Garuda, the two countries engage in regular army and navy staff talks and exercises. The 20th edition of the Army-to-Army Staff Talks was held in Delhi in November 2024, and the 17th round of Navy-to-Navy Staff Talks took place in New Delhi in February 2024. The bilateral Army Exercise SHAKTI 2024, held in Meghalaya in May 2024, included participation from Air Force and Navy observers for the first time.

The IAF's participation in Garuda 25 underscores its commitment to strengthening international military cooperation and enhancing interoperability with friendly nations through regular bilateral and multilateral exercises. The exercise showcases the professionalism and operational capabilities of both air forces, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation in air operations.
