Patna, India - A political storm is brewing within the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) following the party's significant defeat in the recent Bihar Assembly elections. Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD patriarch Lalu Prasad Yadav, has announced her departure from politics and declared she is "disowning" her family. The announcement, made via a cryptic post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, November 15, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the party and political circles.
Acharya's decision comes on the heels of the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan's crushing defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, where the party secured only 25 seats. This marks a steep decline from the 75 seats the party won in the 2020 elections. The defeat has seemingly deepened internal fault lines within the RJD, leading to Acharya's dramatic exit.
In her social media post, Acharya stated, "I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family… This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame". Sanjay Yadav is a Rajya Sabha MP and a close aide to Lalu Prasad's son, Tejashwi Yadav, who led the party's campaign in the Bihar elections. Rameez is reportedly an old friend of Tejashwi Yadav from Uttar Pradesh with a political background.
Acharya's statement suggests internal conflict and power struggles within the RJD, with fingers pointed at Sanjay Yadav's growing influence in the party. Sources within the RJD speculate that Acharya was unhappy with Sanjay Yadav's increasing prominence and his proximity to Tejashwi Yadav. It is also speculated that she was unhappy about the expulsion of Tej Pratap Yadav, her elder brother, from the party.
Further fueling speculation of a rift, Acharya had previously unfollowed both Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav on X last month. This move followed social media posts where she criticized Sanjay Yadav's rising influence within the RJD.
Rohini Acharya contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from the Saran constituency on an RJD ticket but was defeated by BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Before entering politics, Acharya, a qualified doctor, was a homemaker based in Singapore with her husband. She gained widespread recognition in 2022 for donating a kidney to her father, Lalu Prasad Yadav, who underwent treatment in Singapore.
The RJD has yet to officially comment on Acharya's resignation and her allegations against Sanjay Yadav and Rameez. However, the party released a statement on X, declaring, "No sorrow in defeat, no arrogance in victory! The Rashtriya Janata Dal is the party of the poor, it will continue to raise their voice among the poor!".
Acharya's sudden exit and accusations have exposed potential internal divisions within the RJD, raising questions about the party's future direction and leadership. Her departure marks a significant blow to Lalu Prasad Yadav's family and the RJD, particularly after the party's disappointing performance in the Bihar Assembly elections. The coming days will be crucial in determining the fallout from this dramatic turn of events and its impact on Bihar's political landscape.
