India Considers Bangladesh's Extradition Request for Sheikh Hasina, Reviewing the Complex Legal and Diplomatic Implications.

India has confirmed that it is currently reviewing a formal request from Bangladesh for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The acknowledgment came on Wednesday from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during a media briefing.

"Yes, we have received that request, and the request is being examined," Jaiswal stated. He further clarified that the request is being processed as part of ongoing judicial and internal legal procedures.

The extradition request follows the recent sentencing of Sheikh Hasina to death by the "International Crimes Tribunal" in Bangladesh. The charges stem from her alleged involvement in the killing of student protestors during the "July Uprising" the previous year. This uprising led to the toppling of her government, after which she fled to India in August 2024.

This isn't the first time Bangladesh has sought Hasina's extradition; the initial request was made in December. The recent death sentence appears to have prompted a reiteration of the request. Following the latest judgment, the Indian government's message to Dhaka was clear: "You may place any demand you wish, but India will take its own decisions in its own way".

India's official stance emphasizes a commitment to the well-being of the Bangladeshi people. "We remain committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, inclusion and stability in that country and will continue to engage constructively in this regard with all stakeholders," Jaiswal affirmed.

The MEA spokesperson also reiterated India's broader commitment to Bangladesh, stating, "As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including in peace, democracy, inclusion, and stability in that country. We will always engage constructively with all stakeholders to that end".

Md Touhid Hossain, Foreign Affairs Adviser, said Bangladesh anticipates a response from India regarding the extradition request, but doesn't expect an immediate answer. "I do not expect that they will answer within a week of Dhaka's request but we expect we will get an answer," he told reporters.

The situation is complex, requiring careful consideration of legal and diplomatic factors. India's decision on the extradition request will likely have significant implications for the relationship between the two countries and the internal dynamics of Bangladesh.
