Manipur's 12th Sangai Festival: A Cultural Extravaganza and a Glimpse into What Makes This Year Unique.

Imphal, Manipur – Manipur is currently hosting its 12th edition of the Sangai Festival, the state's largest cultural showcase, from November 21st to 30th. This year's festival, celebrated under the theme "Festival of Oneness," is particularly special as it marks the return of the grand event after a two-year hiatus. The festival was suspended due to the ethnic conflict that broke out in Manipur in May 2023.

The Sangai Festival is named after the Sangai, Manipur's rare and endangered brow-antlered deer, found exclusively in the state. Since its inception in 2010, the festival has become a platform to promote Manipur's rich cultural heritage and showcase its tourism potential to a global audience.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla inaugurated the festival at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal. The opening ceremony took place at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre (BOAT). Despite the festive atmosphere, the opening day saw sparse attendance compared to previous years, with protests held by internally displaced persons (IDPs) and various organizations. These groups argue that the state government should have prioritized resolving the ethnic conflict and resettling displaced people before organizing such events. A 24-hour cease-work strike was also called by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI).

In his address, Governor Bhalla emphasized the festival's role as a unifying force. He described Manipur's cultural heritage as a "national treasure" and highlighted the multi-venue format as a reflection of the state's resilience and drive for economic recovery. The festival aims to boost the livelihoods of local artisans, youth, and enterprises. He also reiterated the government's commitment to the welfare of IDPs, citing ongoing rehabilitation measures.

This year, the festival is being held across multiple venues in Imphal, Bishnupur, and Senapati districts. The 10-day event features a diverse range of activities, including film and literature festivals, Shumang Leela (traditional theatre), indigenous sports, cultural dance and music performances, adventure sports, an international polo tournament, a music festival, a cherry blossom festival, a Miss Sangai contest, and boat races. One of the highlights is the classical dance form of 'Ras Leela'. The festival also aims to showcase indigenous sports like Mukna Kangjei (Manipuri hockey) and adventure tourism activities.

The Sangai Festival plays a vital role in promoting tourism, celebrating cultural diversity, encouraging indigenous arts and crafts, showcasing sports and adventure potential, boosting the local economy, and fostering national and international integration. The festival will also identify over 135 potential tourist sites for integrated development.

Despite the ongoing challenges, the 12th Sangai Festival is a testament to the spirit of Manipur and its commitment to preserving and promoting its unique cultural identity.
