Amidst the ongoing power struggle in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar evoked the name of Sonia Gandhi, recalling her "sacrifice" of refusing the Prime Minister's position in 2004. Shivakumar's remarks, made in the presence of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at a government event, are viewed as a subtle jab at Siddaramaiah, with whom he is reportedly vying for the chief ministerial post.
The Congress government in Karnataka has crossed the halfway mark of its term, leading to increased speculation about a possible change in leadership. Reports suggest a power-sharing agreement was made in 2023 between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, with each leader expected to hold the Chief Minister's office for half of the government's five-year tenure.
Shivakumar praised Sonia Gandhi for her leadership and for prioritizing the nation's progress over personal ambition. He reminded the audience that despite reportedly being urged by then-President Abdul Kalam to take the Prime Minister's office, she instead nominated Manmohan Singh, highlighting his expertise in economics. Shivakumar linked Gandhi's leadership to the welfare-focused approach seen in schemes for Anganwadi workers.
These remarks came during the 50th anniversary celebration of the Anganwadi program, where both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar appeared together, projecting an image of unity despite the underlying tensions. Shivakumar also emphasized that the state's guarantee programs, particularly those aimed at women, were the result of joint decision-making between him and Siddaramaiah.
The Deputy Chief Minister has been indirectly critical of Siddaramaiah in recent days, particularly regarding the fulfillment of promises related to the reported power-sharing agreement. Shivakumar has alluded to a "confidential understanding on leadership transition" among a few key leaders within the party, adding fuel to the speculation. Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, has placed the responsibility on the party high command to resolve the confusion surrounding the leadership issue.
The Congress high command is expected to address the Karnataka leadership issue soon. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has stated that he, along with Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, will discuss the matter and find a resolution. A meeting is expected in Delhi, where both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar are likely to be summoned for discussions. Sources indicate that Sonia Gandhi is expected to make the final decision regarding the Chief Minister's role.
Despite the power tussle, Shivakumar concluded his address at the Anganwadi event by openly supporting the continuation of the Siddaramaiah-led administration. He called for sustained public support for the government, stating that the Congress party will make every effort to improve the lives of the people.
