South Delhi Building Fire Claims Four Lives, Leaves One Injured
New Delhi – A devastating fire ripped through a four-story building in the Tigri Extension/Sangam Vihar area of South Delhi on Saturday evening, resulting in the deaths of four people and injuries to one. The blaze, which started in a footwear shop on the ground floor, quickly engulfed the entire structure.
Authorities received a PCR call reporting the fire at approximately 6:24 PM, prompting an immediate response from police personnel. Fire officials were alerted shortly after, at 6:27 PM, and dispatched four fire tenders to Mangal Bazar Road, near Poonam Sweets in Sangam Vihar. Upon arrival, first responders found the building ablaze.
Among the deceased are Satender, also known as Jimmy, the 38-year-old owner of the building, and his sister Anita, who was 38 or 40 years old. The fire claimed their lives along with those of two other individuals at the scene. Mamta, a 40-year-old woman, was rescued from the building with 25 percent burn injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital. Sadly, one of the two injured women who were rescued later died in the hospital.
According to a senior police officer, the fire originated in the footwear shop located on the ground floor of the building. The flames rapidly spread to the upper floors, trapping residents inside. Eyewitness accounts indicate the fire erupted around 6:30 PM. One eyewitness reported that a child and a woman were saved from the burning building.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by approximately 7:55 PM. The cooling process followed, ensuring that there was no chance of the fire reigniting.
Crime and forensic teams were called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire. Evidence is currently being collected to determine the exact circumstances that led to the deadly incident. While the investigation is ongoing, initial suspicions suggest the fire began in the footwear shop before spreading to the rest of the building.
The incident has left the community in shock and mourning. Local residents gathered at the scene as firefighters and authorities worked to control the situation. The charred remains of the building and its contents lay scattered on the road, a grim reminder of the tragedy that unfolded.
Authorities are urging residents to take necessary fire safety precautions to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. This includes installing smoke detectors, having fire extinguishers readily available, and ensuring that all electrical wiring is up to code.
This fire follows another recent incident in Delhi, where a major fire broke out at a four-story godown in Naraina Industrial Area early Tuesday morning. That fire led to the collapse of two floors of the building.
