Raghav Chadha Advocates for Gig Worker Rights: Challenging 10-Minute Delivery Services, Emphasizing Human Dignity over Speed.

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha has called for a ban on the 10-minute delivery services offered by quick commerce companies, describing the practice as "cruelty" towards gig workers. Speaking on Friday in the Rajya Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament, Chadha raised concerns about the intense pressure and hazardous conditions faced by delivery personnel striving to meet these ambitious deadlines.

Chadha emphasized that delivery workers are not robots, but individuals with families, and their well-being should be a priority. He referred to gig workers as the "invisible wheels of the Indian economy," highlighting their crucial role in the success of quick commerce and instant commerce companies like Zomato, Swiggy, and Blinkit. Despite contributing to the billion-dollar valuations of these companies, Chadha argued that their working conditions are often worse than those of daily wage laborers.

The AAP leader outlined three major challenges confronting gig workers: the pressure of speed and delivery time, the risk of customer harassment, and dangerous working conditions. He pointed out that the "oppression of speed" forces delivery agents to take extreme risks to meet the 10-minute target. Driven by the fear of reduced ratings, incentive cuts, or even being blocked from the app, they often overspeed and disregard traffic signals, endangering their lives and the safety of others.

Chadha also addressed the issue of customer harassment, noting that delivery agents often face scolding, threats, and negative ratings for delays as short as five to seven minutes. These one-star ratings can significantly impact their monthly performance and earnings.

Furthermore, Chadha highlighted the demanding and unsafe working conditions endured by gig workers. He stated that they typically work long shifts of 13 to 14 hours, exposed to heat, cold, rain, fog, and pollution, often without adequate protective gear or special incentives. Unlike factory workers, they lack permanent employment, humane working conditions, and health and accident insurance.

Chadha urged the House to consider the welfare of gig workers and put an end to the "cruelty" of 10-minute delivery services. He argued that while consumers may appreciate the convenience of rapid delivery, the human cost is too high. By raising this issue in the Rajya Sabha, Chadha seeks to bring attention to the plight of gig workers and advocate for policies that protect their rights and ensure their safety.
