Patna, December 6, 2025 – Speculation is mounting in Bihar's political circles regarding the potential entry of Nishant Kumar, son of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, into active politics. This buzz has been further fueled by recent comments from a senior leader of the Janata Dal (United).
Sanjay Kumar Jha, JD(U)'s national working president and a close confidant of the Chief Minister, openly endorsed Nishant's political debut, stating that party workers and supporters are eager to see him take on responsibilities within the JD(U). Speaking to reporters at Patna Airport on Friday, Jha remarked that "everybody wants Nishant Kumar to join politics". However, he added the caveat that the final decision rests with Nishant himself.
Nishant Kumar, a 49-year-old engineer, has maintained a relatively low profile, but recently he has increased his public presence. On Friday, he acknowledged the public's mandate in favor of the NDA-JD(U) alliance, calling it a blessing from the citizens of Bihar. He also expressed confidence in his father's leadership, stating that Nitish Kumar had honored his promises in the past and would certainly fulfill the commitment of generating one crore jobs for the youth this time. When asked about joining politics, Nishant declined to comment.
The possibility of Nishant Kumar entering politics has been a topic of discussion for some time. Ahead of the recent Assembly elections, there were expectations that he might contest from Nalanda. Despite the JD(U) achieving a strong victory without his candidacy, the discussions have persisted behind the scenes. Within the JD(U) and the NDA alliance, many believe that Nishant is welcome to join politics and take on key roles. Jha had previously stated that the party would accept Nitish Kumar's decision regarding his son's political debut, emphasizing that the decision ultimately depends on Nishant's interest.
Nitish Kumar, who is one of the longest-serving Chief Ministers in the country, has maintained silence on the issue of his political successor. He has also frequently criticized dynastic politics, a practice he has often accused RJD chief Lalu Prasad of following.
The potential entry of Nishant Kumar into politics has drawn reactions from other political figures as well. Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) stated earlier this year that he would welcome Nishant's entry into politics.
