Dense fog has descended upon Delhi and surrounding areas, causing significant disruption to air travel on Monday, December 15, 2025. The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi has been severely affected, with at least 40 flights cancelled and 4 diverted due to extremely low visibility.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) issued a travel advisory urging passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport. The Ministry of Civil Aviation also released a "heavy fog alert" for Northern India, advising passengers to check with their airlines for the latest updates and to allow extra travel time. They assured that Air Traffic Control (ATC) and other teams are working to minimize disruptions, with safety as the top priority.
Several airlines have also issued advisories. IndiGo reported that low visibility and fog in Delhi would impact flight schedules and that they were closely monitoring the weather. Air India advised passengers to check their flight status on their website before heading to the airport due to poor visibility impacting flight operations in Delhi and other parts of Northern India.
Delhi Airport officials stated that operations are being conducted under CAT III conditions, which refers to an advanced landing system that allows aircraft to land safely in very low visibility. However, flights not equipped for CAT III operations are more likely to be affected. Airport authorities have assured passengers of continued support and have deployed teams across all terminals to assist passengers, manage queues, and share updates.
IndiGo has cancelled 36 flights from Delhi, while Air India has grounded 19 flights. SpiceJet has also warned passengers about possible disruptions.
The ঘন fog, the season's first major winter fog spell, has reduced visibility significantly across the Delhi-NCR region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a dense fog warning for the morning and forenoon hours. In addition to the airport disruptions, the dense fog has also affected early morning movement within the city. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 457 as of 6 a.m., indicating "severe" air quality.
