Former Oilers Goalie Potentially Returning: Edmonton Considers Waiver Claim to Revamp Goaltending Situation

The Edmonton Oilers could potentially reshape their goaltending situation by claiming former Oilers goalie Laurent Brossoit off waivers. The Chicago Blackhawks placed Brossoit on waivers, opening the door for Edmonton to acquire him at no cost, but it's not that easy.

NHL insiders suggest that the Oilers are still looking to adjust their goalie tandem even after trading for Tristan Jarry. The team may be looking to replace Calvin Pickard, and it appears Connor Ingram is not the answer.

Brossoit, 32, previously played 28 games for the Oilers from 2015 to 2018. He has a total of 140 career games in the NHL. After missing last season due to injury, Brossoit played three games in the AHL on a rehab stint, posting a .900 save percentage. Before his injury, he demonstrated strong performance as a backup goalie, recording a .927 save percentage in his last 34 games dating back to the 2022-23 season.

A major concern deterring teams from claiming Brossoit is his $3.3 million cap hit for the remainder of the season. However, the Blackhawks are willing to trade him and retain some salary. If Edmonton could acquire Brossoit with a $1.65 million cap hit, he would likely be an upgrade over Pickard and Ingram.

It's uncertain whether Edmonton has sufficient cap space for Brossoit's full $3.3 million cap hit, especially after trading Brett Kulak to acquire Jarry. A waiver claim seems unlikely unless Chicago retains salary. If Brossoit clears waivers, Chicago might be open to retaining half his salary in exchange for a player, prospect, or draft pick.

Brossoit's recent injury history makes him a gamble. However, having both Brossoit and Ingram could provide decent insurance if Jarry were to get injured. Acquiring Brossoit would not be a heavy cost, aside from a draft pick.

It is speculated that Brossoit will clear waivers due to his contract price. There is a 25 percent chance that Oilers GM Stan Bowman would want to trade for Brossoit if he clears waivers.
