India's "Homebound" on the Oscars 2026 Shortlist: A Strong Contender for Best International Film Award

In a momentous achievement for Indian cinema, Neeraj Ghaywan's "Homebound" has been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. This announcement, confirmed by Dharma Productions, marks a significant step for the film on the global stage and underscores its growing international recognition. The film is now among a select group of international films vying for a final nomination.

"Homebound" premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and was selected as the second runner-up in the International People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). The film's journey from its premiere to the Oscar shortlist highlights its resonance with both critics and audiences.

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and produced by Dharma Productions, with Martin Scorsese as an executive producer, "Homebound" features a cast including Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor. The film is inspired by a 2020 New York Times essay by Basharat Peer, which chronicled the lives of two friends during India's COVID-19 lockdown.

"Homebound" delves into the socio-political realities of contemporary India, capturing the mass displacement of migrant workers following the outbreak of COVID-19. The film follows the story of Chandan, a Dalit, and Shoaib, a Muslim, who dream of joining the police force and securing a better future for their families despite facing caste and religious biases. The narrative explores themes of friendship, inequality, and loss against the backdrop of a country grappling with social divisions and the impact of the pandemic.

The film portrays Chandan Kumar Valmiki and Mohammed Shoaib Ali, two childhood friends from a small North Indian village, who believe that a police uniform might finally give them the respect they deserve. However, as they come closer to their goal, pressures and struggles strain their friendship. When the results of the police recruitment exam are released, only Chandan is selected, creating a rift between the two friends. The emotional climax unfolds as Chandan develops a high fever during their journey back to their village, leading to a poignant exploration of their bond.

Neeraj Ghaywan stated that the film carries the essence of the home we all share, rooted in the love for our land and our people. Karan Johar, the producer, expressed his hope that the film would find its audience and make a significant impact.

The shortlist selection places "Homebound" in competition with other international films. The Academy members from all branches are invited to participate in the nominations round and must view all 15 shortlisted films to vote. The final nominees will be chosen from this narrowed list. The 98th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 22, 2026.
