Karan Johar is ecstatic as "Homebound," a film co-produced by his Dharma Productions, has made it to the Oscar's 2026 shortlist in the Best International Feature Film category. The film, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in leading roles.
"Homebound" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section on May 21, 2025, where it received a nine-minute standing ovation. It was released in Indian theaters on September 26, 2025, to critical acclaim. Later, on November 21, 2025, it became available on Netflix.
Johar expressed his excitement on social media, sharing a screenshot of the shortlisted films and thanking director Neeraj Ghaywan for making their dreams a reality. He lauded the entire cast and crew and acknowledged the overwhelming journey from Cannes to the Oscar shortlist. Dharma Productions also shared their gratitude for the global support the film has received.
"Homebound" is inspired by a 2020 New York Times article by Basharat Peer, which recounted the story of two young migrant workers during India's COVID-19 lockdown. The film tells the story of two childhood friends, Shoaib (Ishaan Khatter) and Chandan (Vishal Jethwa), who aspire to join the police force. As they get closer to their dream, their bond is threatened by mounting desperation and challenging circumstances. The film explores themes of friendship, inequality, and loss, set against the backdrop of socio-political realities in India.
The movie has garnered praise for Ghaywan's direction, the performances of the cast, and its sensitive handling of complex themes. Prior to the Oscar shortlist announcement, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan lauded "Homebound" as "gentle, honest, and soulful," further boosting the film's reach and momentum.
"Homebound" has already received accolades, including being named the second runner-up in the International People's Choice Awards at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It also counts Oscar winner Martin Scorsese as its executive producer.
The film is competing with other acclaimed international films for a final nomination for the Academy Award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists in twelve categories. "Homebound"'s journey reflects a growing appreciation for Indian cinema on the global stage.
