Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh has asserted that he is receiving threats following his recent remarks in Parliament that invoked the name of Lord Ram. Singh has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading misinformation and falsely attributing statements to him, and he has warned that he will take legal action against the party and social media accounts engaging in what he describes as "hate-mongering".
Singh made the initial statement in Parliament, which sparked controversy and drew criticism from BJP members. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi even accused opposition parties of appeasement politics in response to Singh's remarks. Singh's statement was: "Ram ke naam mein charitra hona chahiye, warna haram mein bhi Ram likha hua hai". This translates to "There must be character in the name of 'Ram,' otherwise the word 'Ram' is also found within the word 'Haram' (forbidden/unethical)".
In response to the backlash, Singh defended his statement by claiming he was reiterating a quote used by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Singh stated that Vajpayee made the remark in response to Ram Vilas Paswan's observation that his name also contained "Ram". Singh has challenged the BJP to apologize for what he called Vajpayee's "sin" if they find the quote objectionable.
Singh has said that the threats he is receiving will not deter him from speaking out against corruption. In a post on X, Singh stated that he would not allow corruption in the name of Lord Ram, regardless of the threats. "Threats have started coming in, but listen up with your ears wide open, BJP folks—kill me, chop me up, hang me from a gibbet if you must, but in the name of Lord Shri Ram, I won't let you get away with corruption," he stated.
Singh has announced that he is preparing to take legal action against the BJP and social media accounts for allegedly misrepresenting his speech and spreading false claims. He plans to file a complaint with Parliament's Privilege Committee. "I'm preparing to take legal action against the BJP, which is falsely attributing Atal Ji's statement to me and spreading lies, along with all those hate-mongering Twitter handles. I'll also file a complaint with the Privilege Committee for spreading lies in the name of the speech I gave in Parliament," Singh said.
Sanjay Singh is a prominent leader in the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and has been a Rajya Sabha member from Delhi since 2018. He is also a national spokesperson for the party.
