AIMSA Appeals to PM Modi for Assistance to Indian Students in Bangladesh

Amid growing concerns over the safety and well-being of Indian medical students in Bangladesh, the All India Medical Students' Association (AIMSA) has urgently appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for intervention. Citing an atmosphere of "unsafe and uncertain conditions," AIMSA's representation to the Prime Minister highlights the fear and anxiety gripping students and their families.

The association's letter, signed by AIMSA J&K Vice President Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan, was also addressed to External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, underscoring the urgency and importance of the matter. AIMSA is requesting immediate diplomatic action to ensure the physical safety of the students, strengthen support through the Indian Embassy, and maintain clear communication channels with both the students and their families. They emphasize that Indian students who choose to pursue medical education overseas do so with the confidence that the Indian government will safeguard them during times of crisis.

The plea from AIMSA comes against a backdrop of ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, which has seen political instability and protests since the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. An interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is currently in power, with elections scheduled for the following year.

Recent reports suggest a rise in attacks against individuals perceived as supporters of Hasina, including some members of the Hindu community, further exacerbating the sense of insecurity in the country. This prevailing environment has triggered significant apprehension among Indian students studying in Bangladesh, prompting their families back home to voice deep concerns.

Echoing AIMSA's concerns, Jammu and Kashmir leader Imran Reza Ansari has also appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to ensure the safe return of students from Jammu and Kashmir stranded in Bangladesh due to the unrest. Ansari emphasized the need for timely government intervention, drawing parallels with recent evacuations from Iran, and highlighted the distress faced by the families of these students.

The situation has prompted calls for the Indian government to take immediate and decisive action. AIMSA's letter to Prime Minister Modi specifically requests the Prime Minister's Office, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, to initiate immediate protective measures for the Indian students in Bangladesh. The association believes that the government's proactive involvement is crucial to ensuring the safety and well-being of these students during this period of uncertainty.
