Dhaka, Bangladesh – In a call for regional stability, Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Grigoryevich Khozin urged Bangladesh to ease tensions with India, emphasizing the historical ties between the nations dating back to the 1971 Liberation War. Speaking at a press conference held at the Russian Embassy in Dhaka on Monday, December 22, 2025, Khozin underscored the importance of mutual trust and confidence in bilateral relations between neighboring countries.

Khozin noted that creating a conducive environment is essential ahead of Bangladesh's upcoming national election, scheduled for February 12, 2026. He stressed that reducing tensions with India would contribute significantly to this environment. "The sooner this happens, the better," he added.

The ambassador highlighted the role of both India and Russia in Bangladesh's independence in 1971, recalling India's crucial support during the war. He stated that Russia does not wish to interfere in the bilateral relations of Bangladesh and India but believes it would be wise to ensure that tensions do not escalate beyond their current level.

Khozin's comments come amid recent strains in India-Bangladesh relations. Security concerns have been raised by both countries regarding their respective diplomatic missions. The Indian Visa Application Centre in Chattogram temporarily suspended operations, and visa services from the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi were also temporarily suspended. These actions followed protests and demonstrations.

Recent tensions have arisen following the death of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman Hadi, with allegations that his shooter fled to India. Bangladesh's foreign ministry summoned the Indian High Commissioner, expressing concerns about "anti-Bangladesh activities" allegedly being planned by fugitive Awami League members based in India. India, in turn, summoned the Bangladesh High Commissioner to express concerns over the "deteriorating security environment" in Bangladesh.

Despite these challenges, there have been efforts to maintain positive relations. Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain assured that maintaining good relations with India remains a priority. In early December 2024, a diplomatic visit by India's foreign secretary aimed to reduce tensions, with discussions focusing on "joint and concerted efforts" and increased engagement.

Ambassador Khozin also addressed broader aspects of Russia-Bangladesh bilateral relations. He mentioned that Bangladesh remains Russia's second-largest trade partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade turnover exceeding US$2 billion annually. Russia exports machinery, wheat, fertilizers, and other agricultural products, while importing ready-made garments and textile goods from Bangladesh. He also noted the deferred commencement of the main debt repayment for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project by 1.5 years.

Khozin welcomed the Election Commission's announcement of the election schedule and expressed hope that the polls would be held on time. He added that Russia is in contact with the Election Commission and is awaiting an official invitation to send Russian observers.
