Yami Gautam experienced a whirlwind of emotions while filming "Article 370," as she discovered she was pregnant with her and Aditya Dhar's first child. The actress described feeling "nervous" as she balanced her professional commitments with the responsibilities of expecting a baby.
Gautam and Dhar, who married in June 2021 after meeting on the set of "Uri: The Surgical Strike," announced their pregnancy at the trailer launch of "Article 370" in early February 2024. Dhar proudly stated, "This film is a family affair... there is a baby on its way". At the time of the announcement, Gautam was five-and-a-half months pregnant.
Gautam revealed that she was initially anxious upon learning about her pregnancy during the film's production. "I was expecting when I was shooting Article 370, so you can imagine how nervous I must have been," she said. However, she found strength and inspiration from her mother, who encouraged her to continue working as long as she was medically fit. Gautam also drew inspiration from seeing her mother work through her pregnancy. She noted that women are stronger than they often give themselves credit for.
Fortunately, the most physically demanding parts of the film, including action sequences and rigorous training, had been completed before Gautam's pregnancy. This allowed her to focus on the "talking portions, scenes, exterior shots, travel and all" during her pregnancy. She expressed gratitude to the doctors who secretly monitored her health throughout the shoot.
Despite the challenges, Gautam acknowledged the support she received from her husband, Aditya Dhar, and her team. Dhar, who produced the film, ensured that necessary precautions were taken and that a panel of doctors was present on set. Gautam emphasized that she couldn't have managed without Dhar's support.
Gautam also spoke about resuming work after her son, Vedavid, was born in 2024. She highlighted the importance of having a strong support system, particularly her mother, who provided invaluable emotional safety. Gautam emphasized that there is no harm in asking for help and that families should support working mothers. She also acknowledged the responsibility of giving 100 percent to her work, especially in a high-stakes industry. To balance work and motherhood, Gautam shared how she would take a weekly flight to spend a day with her baby before returning to the set.
Reflecting on the experience of becoming a mother, Gautam described it as a profound and life-altering transformation. "Everything was the same, but I felt that whoever I was before this moment is completely different from who I am now," she said. She added that motherhood changes you for the good.
"Article 370," directed by Aditya Suhas Jambhale, was released in February 2024 and has garnered attention for its powerful narrative inspired by true events that shaped the fate of Kashmir.
