Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended Christmas morning service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in New Delhi on Thursday, marking a continued outreach to the Christian community. Joining a large congregation of Christians from Delhi and North India, the Prime Minister participated in prayers, carols, and hymns. Rt. Rev. Dr. Paul Swarup, the Bishop of Delhi, led a special prayer for the Prime Minister during the service.
Modi shared his reflections on social media platform X, extending Christmas greetings to the citizens. "Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas filled with peace, compassion and hope. May the teachings of Jesus Christ strengthen harmony in our society," he wrote. Officials stated that the Prime Minister's message highlighted the enduring ideals of love, service, and brotherhood, emphasizing their relevance in fostering social harmony and mutual respect.
The Prime Minister's presence at the Christmas service is part of his ongoing engagement with the Christian community. In recent years, Modi has regularly attended programs connected with the Christian community, including an Easter program at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Delhi in 2023. During Christmas 2023, he hosted a program at his residence. In 2024, he attended a dinner at Minister George Kurian's residence and a program hosted by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI).
The Cathedral Church of the Redemption, known for its architectural heritage and historical importance, has a tradition of hosting significant Christmas services attended by leaders and dignitaries.
However, the visit has received mixed reactions from some Christians and civil society groups, who point to recent incidents of intimidation and violence against Christians. Christmas carol services, prayer gatherings, and community celebrations have faced objections, disruptions, or alleged attacks in several states. Some events were even canceled due to protests.
Church leaders and rights groups have stated that while symbolic gestures and festival greetings are welcome, they do little to address the deeper concerns of insecurity and fear among minorities. A senior church representative said that the community expects more than theatrics, emphasizing the need for clear assurances of protection, swift action against perpetrators of violence, and a strong public message against hate.
Across the nation, cities were adorned with lights, bells, and wreaths as people celebrated Christmas. Market storefronts featured decorations such as Santa Claus sleighs, bells, decorative wreaths, glowing stars and Christmas trees.
