The tragic death of Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura, following a racial attack in Dehradun, has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with "Bigg Boss 18" contestant Chum Darang joining the chorus demanding justice. Chakma, who was allegedly subjected to racial slurs before being brutally attacked on December 9, succumbed to his injuries on Friday after fighting for his life for over two weeks.

The incident occurred in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, when Anjel and his brother Michael were accosted by a group of men who allegedly hurled racial slurs at them, referring to them as "Chinese". According to a police complaint filed by Michael, the men were intoxicated. Witnesses reported that when Anjel asserted their Indian identity, stating, "We are not Chinese...We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?", the situation escalated, leading to a violent confrontation.

Anjel sustained severe injuries to his neck and spine after being attacked with knives, while Michael was also injured. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the attack, including two juveniles. However, one of the main accused, Yagya Awasthi, is currently absconding and believed to have fled to Nepal. Police have launched a manhunt and announced a reward of ₹25,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Chum Darang, a model, actress, social activist, and entrepreneur from Arunachal Pradesh who participated in "Bigg Boss 18", has voiced her concern and disappointment over the incident. Darang, who has previously spoken about facing prejudice due to her appearance, questioned when such discriminatory attitudes would change.

The Tripura Chakma Students’ Association (TCSA) announced planned protests, including a candlelight vigil, and submission of a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, emphasizing alleged police negligence and demanding accountability.

News of Anjel's death has triggered anger and grief across Tripura and other northeastern states, with protests erupting in colleges and universities. Student organizations and youth groups have demanded strict action against the perpetrators and called for the implementation of a national law against racial hate crimes, seeking better protection and dignity for students from the Northeast studying in other parts of India. They have also highlighted the ongoing racism faced by people from the Northeast, who are often stereotyped and subjected to derogatory terms.

Authorities have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that the culprits will face justice. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that such incidents are unacceptable and that the government would take strict action against those responsible. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma also condemned the attack, asserting that people from the Northeast are as Indian as any other citizen.

Anjel's last rites were conducted in his native village in Unakoti district, Tripura. His death has not only left his family and community in mourning but has also reignited the conversation around racial discrimination and the need for greater inclusivity and awareness.
