Ashwin Advocates for Young Indian Batter's ODI Debut: A Fearless, Next-Generation X-Factor Player Poised to Shine

Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his strong support for Abhishek Sharma, advocating for the inclusion of the dynamic batter in India's ODI squad. Ashwin believes Sharma possesses the qualities to become a next-generation "X-factor" player for the national team.

Ashwin's endorsement comes on the heels of Sharma's exceptional performance in T20Is throughout 2025. The left-handed batsman amassed 859 runs in 21 matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 193.46, including a century and five half-centuries. His outstanding performance has propelled him to the top of the ICC's T20I rankings. Sharma's consistent match-winning contributions have solidified his position in India's T20I setup, making him a regular member since his debut after the 2024 World Cup. He also played a key role in India's Asia Cup victory, scoring the most runs (314) while maintaining a striking strike rate of 200.

"It's not just the arrival of Abhishek Sharma, but the arrival of India's next generation X-factor player," Ashwin stated on 'Ash ki Baat'. "If there is one player who has been the best for India in 2025, it has to be him. He has batted really well. He has reimagined India's powerplay batting and has been exceptional. I would love to see him in the ODI format as well. I think he will probably be the Men's team player of the year".

Ashwin highlighted Sharma's fearless approach and consistency at the top of the order, expressing confidence in his ability to seamlessly transition into the ODI format.

While Sharma has become a mainstay in the T20I team, an ODI call-up has remained elusive. Despite his Asia Cup success earning him a spot in the India A team, he is yet to break into the ODI squad.

Ashwin also acknowledged the comeback of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the ODI format after their Test retirements earlier in the year. He emphasized their determination to win the 2027 ODI World Cup, noting their participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy as a testament to their commitment.

In related news, Ashwin had previously weighed in on the debate surrounding Riyan Parag's potential inclusion in the ODI team. While acknowledging Parag's talent and List A average of 41, Ashwin suggested that the all-rounder needs to demonstrate versatility and experience batting in the middle order before warranting a place in the ODI setup. He noted that Parag has primarily batted at No. 3 or 4, and the team currently needs someone who can provide impetus at No. 5 or 6 and contribute with overs. Parag has played a single ODI for India, scoring 15 runs.
