The highly anticipated "Thalaivar 173," starring Rajinikanth and produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International, has faced an unexpected turn with director Sundar C's departure from the project. The film, Rajinikanth's 173rd, has been a subject of much discussion, especially after the initial announcement of Sundar C as the director.
Sundar C announced his withdrawal via a public statement, citing "unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances". While he expressed that the opportunity to work with Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan was a "dream come true," he emphasized the necessity to follow a diverging path. He also apologized to fans who were eagerly awaiting the venture and assured them of continued entertainment in the future.
Reports suggest that the exit was prompted by creative differences, with Rajinikanth requesting significant script revisions that left Sundar C in confusion. Reportedly, Rajinikanth liked the core idea but wanted major changes to the script. Kamal Haasan intervened to mediate the situation, ensuring the project remains on track.
Following Sundar C's exit, speculation about his replacement began swirling. While several names have been discussed, including "Parking" movie director Ramkumar Balakrishnan and "Dragon" director Ashwath Marimuthu, no director has been officially confirmed for "Thalaivar 173". Recent reports suggest that Rajinikanth was impressed with Ashwath Marimuthu's narration, and an official update is expected soon. Earlier, Lokesh Kanagaraj was also considered to direct, but that did not materialize. There was also a rumor that Dhanush was in talks to direct his former father-in-law in the film.
"Thalaivar 173" is slated for release by Red Giant Movies during Pongal 2027. The film will bring together Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan after 46 years.
