Tarun Garg: The First Indian Head of Hyundai Motor India - Key Facts You Should Know

Effective January 1, 2026, Tarun Garg has officially assumed the role of Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) at Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL). This marks a historic moment as Garg becomes the first Indian national to lead the company since its inception nearly three decades ago.

Garg's appointment underscores the Hyundai Motor Group's increasing emphasis on India as a strategic market and a key manufacturing hub within its global operations. He brings to the table over 32 years of experience in the Indian automotive industry, poised to guide HMIL into its next phase of growth.

An industry veteran, Tarun Garg began his career as Deputy Manager of Logistics at Maruti Suzuki India Ltd in 1994. He progressively ascended through the ranks, eventually becoming the National Sales Head in July 2010 and later serving as Executive Director of Marketing. Garg held this position until December 2019, marking the end of his 26-year tenure with Maruti Suzuki.

In December 2019, Garg joined Hyundai Motor India as Director of Sales, Marketing, and Service. He was then promoted to Chief Operating Officer (COO) in January 2023. Before his latest promotion to MD & CEO, he served as the COO of Hyundai Motor India.

Garg's educational background includes a degree in mechanical engineering from Delhi Technological University and an MBA from IIM Lucknow. This blend of technical expertise and marketing acumen has shaped his leadership style throughout his career.

During his time at HMIL, first as Head of Sales, Service & Marketing, and subsequently as Whole-time Director and COO, the company achieved record-breaking sales for three consecutive years and attained its highest-ever profitability and EBITDA margins. Garg also played a crucial role in Hyundai Motor India's landmark IPO in 2024 and in strengthening the brand's position in the SUV segment.

Aligned with Hyundai's global vision of 'Progress for Humanity,' Garg aims to strengthen Hyundai's legacy and create meaningful mobility solutions. He has been closely associated with Hyundai Motor India's growth in recent years.

Looking ahead, Garg's leadership agenda will focus on four key priorities: accelerating the development of future-ready technologies such as electric vehicles (EVs), hybrids, and connected mobility, supported by an investment of ₹45,000 crore through FY2030; strengthening the company’s people, dealer, and supplier ecosystems; deepening customer-centric initiatives across all touchpoints; and enhancing indigenization to establish India as a key export hub for emerging markets.

Garg's vision for Hyundai Motor India revolves around building upon the company's strong foundation while accelerating its transformation toward sustainable growth, technological leadership, and unmatched customer delight. He also aims to reinforce the company's commitment to 'Make in India' and position HMIL as a global hub for exports.
