Meerut, India – In a statement that has ignited political and social media debate, BJP leader Sangeet Som has sharply criticized Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for the inclusion of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman in the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team for the upcoming IPL season. Som, a former member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, went as far as to call Khan a "traitor" for the decision.
Speaking at a public event in Meerut, Som linked the inclusion of Rahman to alleged atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh, arguing that Khan's actions prioritize commercial interests over national sentiment. He claimed that by purchasing a Bangladeshi player, Khan was being insensitive to the regional situation. Som questioned why a Bangladeshi cricketer was given a place in the IPL.
"Shah Rukh Khan is a traitor to the nation. Such people have no right to live in India," Som stated, according to reports. He further added that players like Rahman wouldn't be able to "step outside the airport" if they came to play in India. Som also accused Khan of disloyalty, suggesting that Khan betrays the country with the money he earns from its people.
The controversy erupted after KKR, a team co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan, acquired Mustafizur Rahman for ₹9.20 crore in the recent IPL auction. This acquisition, a routine part of the league's auction proceedings, has now been embroiled in political controversy.
Som's comments have drawn strong reactions from various quarters. While some support his stance, others have criticized him for politicizing sports and promoting divisive rhetoric. Social media platforms are flooded with opinions, reflecting the deep polarization of views on the matter.
This is not the first time Shah Rukh Khan has faced criticism from right-wing groups. He has previously been targeted for his views on religious tolerance and alleged donations to Pakistan. The current controversy further intensifies the ongoing debate about nationalism, cultural identity, and the role of celebrities in Indian society.
The IPL, a major sporting event in India, often attracts significant attention and is sometimes caught in the crossfire of political and social issues. With the new season approaching, it remains to be seen how this controversy will unfold and whether it will have any impact on KKR or the participation of Bangladeshi players in the league.
