Lokpal cancels contentious tender for seven BMW cars amid public scrutiny and concerns.

India's anti-corruption watchdog, Lokpal, has scrapped its controversial tender to procure seven luxury BMW cars, collectively worth approximately ₹5 crore. The decision, which was confirmed on January 1, 2026, comes roughly two months after the initial tender was floated on October 16, 2025.

The procurement plan involved acquiring seven BMW 3 Series 330Li cars. The vehicles were intended for the use of the Lokpal chairperson and its six members. The tender specified BMW 330Li "M Sport" models with a long wheelbase, all in white. The estimated on-road cost for the fleet in New Delhi was around ₹5 crore. The selected vendor would have been required to conduct training programs for Lokpal drivers, including both classroom sessions and practical, on-road training, to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vehicles.

The decision to cancel the tender followed widespread criticism from opposition parties, civil society groups, and social media users. Critics questioned the necessity of such expensive vehicles for an organization mandated to fight corruption and promote austerity. Some argued that the proposal was inconsistent with the Lokpal's mission and public expectations. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had mockingly referred to the institution as "Shauq Pal". Similarly, former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant urged the Lokpal to abandon the tender and instead opt for domestically manufactured electric vehicles.

Officials stated that the decision to withdraw the tender was made after a meeting of the full bench of the Lokpal. A formal notice, a corrigendum, was issued on December 16, 2025, formalizing the cancellation. While the Lokpal has not officially stated the reasons for the cancellation, it is viewed as an attempt to mitigate controversy and restore public trust in the institution. The Lokpal will now explore more cost-effective transportation alternatives, such as leasing or using government pool vehicles, while ensuring adequate security.
