BCCI Warns ODIs Face Uncertain Future Without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's Star Power

The future of One Day International (ODI) cricket faces growing uncertainty as two of its biggest stars, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, approach the twilight of their careers. Concerns are mounting within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and among cricket pundits about the format's relevance in the post-"Ro-Ko" era.

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced serious doubts about the future of ODI cricket beyond the 2027 World Cup. He suggests that the increasing popularity of T20 leagues and the enduring appeal of Test cricket are gradually diminishing the space for the 50-over format. Ashwin noted the increased interest in the Vijay Hazare Trophy when Kohli and Rohit participated, highlighting their importance in maintaining the format's relevance. He questions what will happen to ODIs once they retire.

Kohli and Sharma have retired from T20Is in 2024 and Tests in 2025 and are now only active in the ODI format.

In 2025, Kohli scored 651 runs in 13 matches, averaging over 65, while Sharma scored 650 runs in 14 ODIs. Both players had outstanding performances in the series against Australia and South Africa.

The BCCI is aware that Kohli and Rohit would be 39 and 40 years old, respectively, by the 2027 ODI World Cup. There have been internal discussions about how the two veterans can maintain peak form and fitness with limited match practice, given that ODI cricket is becoming the least-played format.

The board is taking a measured approach to the situation, recognizing the massive fan following of both players. While some reports suggested a possible farewell game for the duo, a BCCI source indicated that no such discussions have occurred.

To ensure ODI cricket's survival, Ashwin proposed limiting the format to a major global event every four years. This would create a sense of anticipation and excitement among fans. He believes that without such measures, ODI cricket is heading towards "a slow death".

The Ro-Ko's impressive ODI performances in 2025 have set the stage for 2026, but the underlying concerns about the future remain. While fans are eager to see them in action, their long-term presence in the format is uncertain. The BCCI faces the challenge of preparing for the 2027 World Cup while managing the transition to a new generation of players.
