Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara has stated that the decision regarding the state's Chief Ministership rests solely with the Congress high command. This announcement comes amid ongoing speculation and internal party dynamics fueling debate over a possible leadership change within the Karnataka Congress.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Parameshwara clarified that he has not formed any groups or issued instructions to supporters to demand that he be made the next Chief Minister. He stated, "There is no 'my team'. Some people, friends or well-wishers, may express their views on their own. Even when I visit districts, some people say such things. It is their interest, but ultimately, the high command will make a decision".
The Home Minister's remarks are set against the backdrop of an alleged power struggle within the Karnataka Congress, where the Chief Ministership has become a contentious issue, particularly after the government completed half of its term. Key figures in the unfolding political dynamics include Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara himself.
Parameshwara's recent statement echoes his sentiments from late November 2025, when he acknowledged being in the "race" for the Chief Minister post. At the time, he downplayed the speculation, noting that the party's top leadership had not discussed the matter. He also referenced a convention where the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief is often considered for the Chief Minister position, a role he held in 2013.
In late November 2025, amid the perceived tussle between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, Parameshwara remarked that the aspirations of the people could not be suppressed, noting that Dalits often express their aspirations when there is talk of a change in Chief Minister. He reiterated that the high command is closely watching the developments and will resolve the issues.
Parameshwara has also stated that he would welcome either Mallikarjun Kharge or D.K. Shivakumar as Chief Minister if the party leadership decides so. He dismissed discussions about a Deputy Chief Minister post as speculation, emphasizing that the government will complete its five-year term.
Earlier on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Parameshwara extended New Year greetings to the people of Karnataka on behalf of himself and the state police department. He conveyed his prayers for a successful life for everyone, especially the younger generation, and pledged to ensure Karnataka remains peaceful and maintains law and order.
G. Parameshwara has been serving as the Home Minister of Karnataka since May 27, 2023. He has a long history in Karnataka politics, including serving as Deputy Chief Minister and the President of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee for two terms.
